THE CHALLENGE

Radars were invented in the 1940s and they revolutionised air traffic control.

Radars transform aircrafts’ analogical echo into a data stream. All relevant information for tracker systems is encoded and sent to the network of control centres. This datastream is coded in the All-purpose structured EUROCONTROL surveillance information exchange, also known as ASTERIX.

ASTERIX defines the low level (“down to the bit”) implementation of a data format used for exchanging surveillance-related information and other air traffic management tools.

ASTERIX needs to be decoded and as there are as many decoders as there are radar operators, we need you: to create a fast and flexible piece of software that decodes and encodes ASTERIX. The de/encoding can’t be hardcoded. It needs to use a description of ASTERIX for building inputs for a parser.

The result will be an ASTERIX CODEC.

Help us create the best ASTERIX decoder and make it a world reference!

WHO CAN JOIN ?

  • Any ”low level hard-core bit and bytes decoding” enthusiast can take part in the hackathon.
  • The competition is open to any higher education student or postgraduate student in the fields of software engineering, electronics design and similar.
  • Participants must register latest by 22/09/2016.
  • The participants must be nationals of one of  EUROCONTROL’s or ECAC’s Member States.
  • You also need to have a team of two to three people.
No team? No problem! We will team you up with other participants.
  • Each member of the winning team will be given a cash prize of €1,000. There will also be the possibility of a traineeship at EUROCONTROL to complete the exciting work begun at the hackathon.
  • If you win, your traineeship should start within 12 months of completing your studies.
